A Welcoming Sign

Upon a fair and tranquil morning, my beloved requested that I craft a “welcome” sign to grace the rear porch, suspended above the screened door. I envisioned a sign adorned with a script font, elegant and refined. Thus, I embarked upon a quest to Carbide Create, a mystical vector design software that accompanies the Shapeoko CNC machine.

In the creation of this sign, one must first conjure the vectors for the letters and outlines. These enchanted lines are then assigned paths for the tools, determining the regions to be carved from the wood. Carbide Create bestows upon its user the gift of foresight, offering a simulation of the final artifact’s appearance.

With the toolpaths conjured, the journey led to the Shapeoko CNC machine. For the noble material, I chose to repurpose a plank salvaged from an ancient bed headboard. The plank was secured upon the CNC workbench, and the magical carving commenced.

Once freed from the plank, the sign required final touches—sanding and the application of a clear finish. Yet, upon closer inspection, I discovered an unusual amount of sap at the heart of the wood, an oddity for timber aged 60 to 70 years. Thus, the sign must be allowed to dry before the project can reach its completion.

And so, the tale of the “welcome” sign continues, a journey of craftsmanship and patience, awaiting its final transformation.
