In the ancient days, when years uncounted had passed, a craftsman of humble means, burdened by the mundane task of adding mere steps to the backdoor of his timeworn workshop, found his mind stirred by a grander vision. “Why build steps,” he pondered, “when one could craft a mighty deck?” And thus, the decision was made, an eight-foot by eight-foot edifice, for its design promised fewer tribulations in the shaping by circular saw.

Upon this resolution, he ventured forth to the local Lowes lumberyard, where the needed timbers and supplies were procured. Though the undertaking was formidable, it was not insurmountable for a lone soul. He sought the aid of his brother, for in companionship is strength found, even in the most arduous of labors.

The noble quest began with the framing of beams and joists, those steadfast sinews of the deck. He acquired a stout 4-inch by 4-inch timber, intending to fashion support posts, yet the ground was not as low as foreseen. Concrete blocks and bricks, relics of bygone projects, were employed in their stead. One beam was affixed to the runners of the workshop, and thereafter, the soil was excavated, and additional beams laid. They squared the structure by measuring the distances corner to corner, ensuring true alignment.

With the frame level and square, the decking boards were then affixed. Screws, chosen for their steadfastness in the face of the relentless expansion and contraction of wood, were driven in place of nails. The boards were butted close, with the foresight that they would shrink in time, creating the proper spaces.

A stack of deck boards lay ready, a testament to the work yet to come. As they were diligently added, the deck took shape, rising from the earth like a vision of old. At last, the task was complete. The deck stood ready to bear the weight of work and leisure alike, a sanctuary of timber beneath the open sky.

Thus, the deck was finished, a testament to the craftsman’s toil and the brotherly bond that made it possible.
