In the realm of the craftsman’s abode, wherein the dance of wood and tool ensues, there oft resided a wooden mallet, wielded by the skilled hands of the woodworker. These mallets, indispensable in their utility, did serve many purposes: from moving material about to tapping chisels and sealing paint cans with resolute force. Some time past, I had fashioned a small mallet, but a larger one was now required to bring forth greater power upon the targeted wood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thus began my endeavor, with a simple three-part design and another of the stout boards I had crafted. The mallet’s head, formidable in its construction, measured nigh three inches in thickness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The task at hand took more effort to secure the stock than it did for the CNC machine to carve out the profiles, which it accomplished in about eight minutes. Tabs were employed to hold the individual parts in place until the profile cutout was completed. Thereafter, an oscillating tool was used to remove the tabs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pieces were then sanded, and their edges rounded upon a compact router table. Painter\u2019s tape was applied to keep the glue from marring the mallet’s faces. Though the clamping appeared excessive, it ensured that the parts’ faces remained aligned. Alignment pins would have indeed served this purpose well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The glue was left to cure through the night, and come morning, the clamps and painter\u2019s tape were removed. The surfaces were meticulously sanded. This mallet, destined as a gift for my nephew who had taken an interest in woodworking, required an engraving to mark its worth. Thus, it returned to the CNC machine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the engraving complete, the mallet was treated with a finish of mineral oil and beeswax, adding the final touch to this labor of love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
