We decided to add a couple of new trees to the entrance of the property. We liked our current River Birch, so we bought two more saplings which were about 10ft tall.
Planting saplings of such large size turned out to be a much larger project than we first thought. We rented a large 8″ auger from Home Depot to help dig the holes for the root balls. The root balls were about 7 ft across which includes the feeder roots. Fortunately, I had a boom pole for the tractor to assist lifting the tree and root ball.

The basic procedure was to use the auger to dig series of holes in a 7ft diameter circle. Then, I would use the mattock and the shovel to remove the soil until the hole was wide and deep enough to accept the root ball.

Here we are at the beginning of Fall and the trees are looking good.
